The morning of the 22nd I raced down to the lions at the zebra kill in the hope of catching them finishing off the remains. They were however gone by the time that we arrived and we spend about 2 hours trying to relocate them. As always Andries, my tracker, excelled and we found them at one of their favourate hiding places. It is remarkable how they continue to hide their cubs at the same places year after year. Noengu Mafazi who has her 1st litter now hides her cubs in exactly the same places where she was hidden when she was young. Truly remarkable. I am not sure if she remembers the places from when she was young or whether she just copies her mother’s hiding spots of her younger sister and brothers. I suspect it must be the latter.
The light was really bad in the morning and looking at the spot where they were hidden I hoped for a good photo oppurtunity in the afternoon. I was not disappointed as it turned out to be a fabulous afternoon. In fact one of my best yet from a photographic point of view.

The past week’s gameviewing have been good with elephants being the main attraction. They are in abundance at the moment and several breeding herds are usually found during game drives. They are one of my favourate animals and every moment spent with them are usually a treat. I spend a few frustrating days trying to find lions for a really nice group of guests, but Lady Luck avoided us this time. We found fresh tracks several times, but we seemed to be 2 steps behind them all the time and they always crossed our boundaries before we could get to them. Shaun had an excellant game drive this morning founding several elephants , rhino and lions feeding on a warthog. He found the 2 big males, Big Boy and Mazinyo, and the 3 young 2 year old males just after they had caught it and camera flashes soon indicated everyone’s approval of a great sighting.

As expected the game drive yesterday afternoon was a real treat. The lion cubs was out in the open and playing all around the vehicle. It exceeded my best expectations and we spend around 2 hours at the sighting. Watch out for the photos! We had close encounters with elephants today and enjoyed a good sighting of 2 bull rhinos as well. They are often visiting Nyari Dam now and it is nice to have them closer to Camp.
The 2 lionesses and 11 cubs leaved the zebra and wildebeest kills early this morning and we followed their tracks to where they were lying up for the day. This afternoon we will again go and look them up. I am looking forward to this as they are in a very scenic spot and it could provide excellant photo oppurtunities. On our way to the lions this morning we came upon a breeding herd of elephants and one bull in musth. He was very relaxed and guests got some good photos. We found some very fresh black rhino tracks, but time caught up with us.
